NOTES : Organic, Natural, Orange, 10 months skin contact
This white Rioja (… orange Rioja) from Honorio Rubio is a wine we love dearly. The label of an orange wine occasionally occasionally leaves guests visibly nervous but 3 or 5 bottles later, it’s often their new favourite wine. It’s part of the producers 5 limited production series of wines and combines a long skin contact with ancient traditions from Georgia to the best of their Viura grapes and only produced 1956 bottles.
Deeply fragrant with apricot, lemon, pear & persimmon takes the lead with further tea notes a bit of pollen and yeast to finish. To taste you get the slightest tannins but it’s vibrant and offers some baked apples in the midst with honey coming through too. It’s got a solid body but no oaky notes and pleasantly lingers as the complex flavours align themselves with a bit of nuttiness coming through and soft spice. It’s a wine that keeps on giving and anyone who has ever had a bad orange wine or isn’t sold on the idea should give it a go. It will change your mind. It happily sits next to anything with a bit of spice and we use it often for inquisitive guests who want something that will stretch across multiple courses but works well with bold flavours. So take your pick really.

WINERY & PRODUCTION
The vineyards of Bodegas Honorio Rubio are spread around Cordovin in La RIoja Alta. This is 100% Viura that’s macerated for up to 10 months in a way that protects the must so no added sulphur is necessary. It’s super high altitude wine too and the traditional lost techniques were inspired by orange wines found in Macedonia, Georgia and Yugoslavia that gives epic results of the intensity and distinctive flavour of the style but also maintaining its identity as a white rioja!
