Alkemi, Markos Markovitis

Super drinkable but also superbly gastronomic rose. This was a great find for our team at Opheem. It’s serious, savoury and structured with the potential to age very well. It ticks all the boxes for a complex rose with spice, pink grapefruit with herbacious and floral notes too! Bittersweet finish and cut with a refreshing acidity made by one of Greece’s legendary family producers. It’s a great expression of the indigenous Xinomavro, often compared with Pinot Noir or Nebbiolo. Bold, dark and complex but without the oak!

WINERY & PRODUCTION

Markos Markovitis is a hero of Greece’s winemaking community. Third generation producer famous for exploring Xinomavro, the Markovitis winery was the first to delve into Organic production in the 70’s. The grape itself is always a pleasure and can draw itself to fragrant rosé like Alkemi or textured reds full of acidity that are built for aging. The grapes are harvest 250 metres above sea level from schist, clay and limestone soils. Handpicked sorted and, after a short maceration, some juice is bled off to make the rosé. This then ferments with wild yeasts in stainless steel for 8months before being bottled unfined with a light filtration.
