The Edizione 21 is created to showcase the taste of Southern Italy by the Fantini group. Using 5 fantastic Italian grapes, the previous vintage we thought was fantastic only to be given this new release which took it to another level. Used for our pairing with a mutton dopiaza, it’s indulgent! Showing all the best characteristics of Montepulciano, that takes the lead in this blend, with a dark colour and intense profile. As a whole, the wine is fabulously balanced and intense. fruity and rich with cherry and blackcurrant. Just a touch of minerality and layers of herbs, liquorice and cocoa but so well rounded. It’s delightful. Dark and rich kashmiri chilli dishes are great but also anything with a higher proportion of onion where the sweetness gives way to the chocolate. The bottle itself is possibly the heaviest thing in the building leading to awkward moments where we have no idea how much is left and just have to pour and see.

WINERY & PRODUCTION

The Fantini group have become a bit of a beast owning several producers and vineyards but Fantini is their flagship. The idea was to showcase the grapes of Abruzzo and their vineyards in southern Puglia.. The Montepulciano and Sangiovese grapes were left to ripen on the vine for a higher concetration before drying naturally. Then pressed and destemmed before a 25 day fermentation. Malolactic took place in new oak barriques (60% american, 40% french). Then left in oak for 12 months. Each varietal is aged separately before carefully blending. Super drinkable but powerful too!
