This Carmenere is seen as one of the, if not the, best example from the whole of Chile that now accounts for 90% of the worlds production. Originally a grape famed in Bordeaux and was all but destroyed in the plagues of the 19th century. It was found to be thriving in Chile in recent years. This is an exceptional example. It’s rich crimson red with elegant aromas of blackberry, blueberry, candied fruits and plum. Its rich and has hints of nutmeg, vanilla as well pastry notes. Beautiful well-structured, rich tannins and a long lingering finish with chocolate. It’s beautiful & indulgent red that is complex and requires decanting for sure.

WINERY & PRODUCTION

Montes have done wonders for the Chilean wine scene for over three decades and are consistently great as a producer. They have an eye for detail in their entire production process that marry big flavours with depth and subtlety. This is the pride of their collection. The 2020 season was very dry in winter leading to significantly low yields. The grapes for Purple Angel are from two of the finest sites in the whole of the Colchagua Valley planted on 45 degree slopes with cool ocean breezes that contrasts the warmth of the region Grapes are hand harvested and cold soaked for seven days to extra aroma. Fermented in controlled stainless steel for up to 15 days. Daily tastings take place to work out the exact point the wine is ready before ageing in french oak for 18 months (80% new and 20% a year old). Petit Verdot is added to the final blend to activate a bit of spice and add some structure.
