The Barovo has been a firm favourite of our list since first adding it years ago and has always been great to see our guests enjoy this example consistently since. It’s chunky, complex with a long, super juicy finish. Made from two indigenous ancient grapes – Kratosija (closely related to primitivo or zinfandel) with thick skins providing lively acidity and fruity notes and Vranec that provides rich tannins and structure. It’s big on the nose with dry blackberry, raspberry and plums with touch of toast, chocolate and liquorice. This wine has great texture, full body and a perfect acidity. For someone who wants something big, bold and structured.

WINERY & PRODUCTION

This winery has been long established on as the leader of the Macedonia wine production since the 19th Century. While Macedonia has long been producing great wine all the way back to the Roman Empire, the Tikves winery offers a state of the art facility with an incredibly thorough and focused attention to detail in their production. Showcasing what is a great region for growing grapes with the most modern of wine making technique. The grapes are all handpicked and chilled before destemming and maceration for 3 days on the skins. Following this, 80%  juice is then fermented in stainless steel tanks for 25 days before 18 months in french oak and then 6 months bottle aging. The focused and meticulous approach gives incredible results that show great depth of character thoughout and the reason why this winery continues to win multiple awards – this wine winning the Gold Award at the Decanter Wine Awards 2019.
